It has been nothing but an absolute pleasure going through the entries of the I Am Nigeria creative competition going by the quality of entries we got. There have also been moments of intense agony trying to pick winners between very close contestants- and for that we totally doff our hats off to the judges! On that note, it is also pertinent to echo what is generally the subjective nature of art/literature and emphasize that any contestant whose entry did not make the cut is not necessarily a subpar creative. It probably just means another entry was a bit better in capturing the aspirations and objectives of this competition.
In the entries we received, we have felt the pulse of the everyday creative Nigerian as to what they make of Nigeria from past, present and future perspectives. We also hope in our own little way, this competition and the anthology that follows can serve as some sort of springboard for the redefinition of Nigerian values by Nigerians themselves. It is more apropos that we do this exercise ourselves rather than wait for some foreign media or colonialist to tell us who we are or all that we can be.
What follows is a list of the winners spanning the art and writing categories. Interestingly, we did not receive a single entry in the music category. Perhaps the objectives of the competition did not leave much space to talk about derrieres. Lolz.
Anyway, that vacuum means that we have added 5 honourable mentions to what was originally planned! As stated in the press release of the competition, the winners and honourable mentions would all be included in an anthology and everybody in this anthology gets a token prize! (Same terms and conditions apply) We would send an email to everyone mentioned below requesting for account details. The winner in each category also gets a CreativeNaija hoodie which is nothing if not a bespoke piece of haute couture produced in an environmentally friendly way. If you would also like a hoodie as a stamp of your creativity or to support the work we are doing, kindly check out our merchandise store on this link:
