I AM NIGERIA
I was Nigeria.
There when we won our freedom,
The 1st of October, 1960;
We chased the white men out.
We won.
Holding onto our colours,
Green, white, green.
The 20th of October, 2020;
We protested for change,
We lost.
I am Nigeria.
In the daily struggles of the market women,
Of the desperate, unemployed graduates.
Fighting for a better life.
Losing and winning.
I will be Nigeria.
Still standing because it will get better.
No matter how many times I fall,
I’ll get right back up;
Striving for a change.
I am Nigeria.
I am Hope.

This is inspiring! I love the fact that you used your poem to highlight the struggles of a typical Nigerian and how in spite of all of the struggles, we still somehow keep our heads high and keep pressing on, hoping against hope that someday it will all be worth it.
