I AM NIGERIA
I am Nigeria. I am what they call Nigeria. I am Nigerian.
Formerly, Flora Shaw- a British journalist who later married Fredrick Lord Lugard, coined the name *Nigeria*, was The Royal Nigeria Company Territories. The name Nigeria was taken from the Niger River. It was coined on 8th January 1897.However, before the invading of the colonial masters into Africa, Nigeria in particular has an already established system of government known as the Pre-colonial system. Based on anarchy. This system of government varies from one ethnic group to another(the Yorubas, Igbos, and the Hausas). The three most prominent ethnic groups in Nigeria have an already established system. Some pre-colonial societies were centralized and others were decentralized. The Yoruba Precolonial (Oyo Empire) was democratic, while the Igbo precolonial (Kingdom of Onitsha) was acephalous and independent, and the Hausa precolonial (Islamic Kanem) was hierarchical and highly centralized.
It can also be agreed that the principle of checks and balances can be sketched back to the Yoruba Precolonial system of government. Moreover, after the Advent of the precolonial system of government, follows the Colonial System Of Administration In Africa. On the arrival of the European leaders met different political institutions and as said earlier, these political institutions were well organized and established. Obviously, the encounter of the traditional rulers weaken the European administrator and prompted them introducing the Policy of Indirect Rule. This policy gave room for some of the traditional rulers on government. They perform some limited functions like the collection of taxes, they preside over the local autonomy. Unlike the French Colonial, Policy of Assimilation. The French saw themselves as superior and restricted Africans in some positions. They tried to impose their culture, language, and way of life. This policy was not flourishing and fast replaced with the Policy of Association. The new policy introduced by the French government allowed Africans to associate with France.
In 1960 Nigeria gained her liberation from the Europeans. Gives room for self-leadership. And in 1963 Nigeria became a Republican State.Nevertheless, after all of these, the negative stereotypes: Political failure, corruption plus actions of Nigerians around the world is what plunges in people’s minds when they hear the word Nigeria. It’s generally believed that Nigeria is a poverty languishing country with no form of security. A state where the citizens are deprived of their rights. A land flowing with corruption and immoralities. Are all these true of Nigeria now?
Nigerians!!! Who are we? We’re a glamorous nation-state, we are Green white Green. We help other states in the growing aspect of Agriculture (Green). We export cocoa, petroleum, and all of that. Full of talented youths and rich in diverse cultures. Nigerians! Who do people say we are? They say we’re hardworking, talented, ambitious, and optimistic but with a bad government. They say we are a country suffering in silence. We’re glued from saying the LINES(TRUTH) which results in corruption of every citizen. How did we get here? Self-centered of the political leaders. Impoverished leadership. Power tuzzle led us here.
What are the things we are? As said earlier, suffering in silence, poverty-stricken. Lost of values. Poor amenities. Zero security. Unemployment, lot living in the street. Institute with no effective educative instruments. What exactly are the things we can be? Optimistically speaking, Nigeria is a state that can flow with milk and honey. A state where the citizens won’t be frightened while sleeping. A state where citizens can be so doing. Where other states would want to explore. Now the question is HOW DO WE GET THERE? There’s No way round than citizens indulging in political participation and selecting A BETTER GOVERNMENT.
